Academic Paper

Option 1:

Turn your zine into an academic article.  This will require you to focus your argument and provide sources.

Option 2:

Pick one or more stories/articles and do a rhetorical analysis of them.
Examples:
  • What common themes or imagery do war stories use?
  • What is the role of religion?
  • Is the old man with wings really an angel?
  • How are people of color viewed?
  • How are children viewed?
  • How is technology and the future presented in the fiction stories (Lottery, There Will Come Soft Rains)

Option 3:

A combination of 1 and 2.  Do a rhetorical analysis of the focus of your zine.  If you focused on Batman, prove how he is an example of the hero's journey.  If you focused on Death Note, show how the manga/show was influenced by Japanese or American culture.  If you focused on serial killers, pick a movie or show or book based on one and look at how these killers are presented.  If you focused on the supernatural, analyze a ghost-hunter show--how do they try to convince you it's real?

Requirements for all options:
  1. 2,000 words (any less and the highest grade you can receive is a D)
  2. 3 academic sources
  3. Works cited page (not included in word count)
Due Dates:
  • Outline and thesis:  December 4 (in class)
  • First draft: December 10, 11:59 to Blackboard
